Automobile Division: How we are governed

The Automotive Division has a small Executive Committee consisting of six senior individuals from automotive industry, research and government.

Andrew Fraser - Chair

Andrew Fraser

Technical Consultant, Zemo Partnership

Andrew works as a technical consultant for the Zemo Partnership, a government-industry partnership, helping accelerate transport to zero emissions. He is involved in projects relating to both CO2 and pollutant emissions reduction, from a wide range of vehicle types.

Prior to joining Zemo in 2019, Andrew spent 33 years working for Ford Motor Company, in both technical and project management roles, mostly related to powertrains and their control systems, specialising in emissions reduction and improving fuel economy. This career included working in both Germany and the USA. Andrew’s final role with Ford was as department manager for development and calibration of small petrol engines, a role which included development of the multi award-winning Ecoboost engine series.

Andrew graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first class honours degree in mechanical engineering, and subsequently completed an MBA at Henley Management College. Andrew has been a member of the IMechE since 1996 and became a Fellow in 2006.

Consultant

Paul Jones graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Manchester Metropolitan University and has worked in the automotive industry for over 30 years.

He spent 12 years with Foden Trucks, in Design & Development, including assignments in UK, USA and the Netherlands; with eventual responsibility for all design and development of new commercial vehicles from 17 – 150 tonnes.

In 2000 he joined Bentley Motors, where he held a range of posts including Chief Programme Engineer for the first-generation Continental GT and Product Line Director for all subsequent Continental GT & Flying Spur models.

In 2010 he was promoted to Director of Product Management, with responsibility for all future Bentley product strategy and planning.

He is now an independent consultant.

Paul has been a Member of IMechE since 1996, a Fellow since 2001 and is a former Chair of the North West Centre of the Automobile Division.

Aaron Mandalia - Vice Chair

Solution Leader for Connected & Autonomous Vehicles, HORIBA MIRA

Aaron graduated from Coventry University in 2016 with a First Class Honours in Combined Engineering. With a keen interested in innovation and connected & automated vehicles, Aaron joined as a graduate within the Technical Strategy & Innovation team at Arriva where his main responsibility was to research the CAV industry and deliver a strategy paper which detailed opportunities for utilising the technology within the public transport network.

From here, he moved into the automotive industry as a Project Co-Ordinator for Business Development & Innovation at SAIC Motor UK, where he was instrumental in implementing an innovation process into the business, identifying innovative ideas, and building teams to develop into a proof of concepts.

He then joined Jaguar Land Rover as an Autonomous Vehicle Engineer where he was responsible for defining the customer level requirements and key performance indicators for multiple ADAS & automated driving features using systems engineering processes, supplemented by simulation and modelling techniques.

Currently, he is the Solution Leader for Connected & Autonomous Vehicles at HORIBA MIRA. This role involves developing the Connected & Autonomous Vehicle consultancy service offering and key use cases on the new ASSURED CAV facilities, alongside business development activities and providing thought leadership within the field.

Fred Walker - Vice Chair and Chair of Events Programme Committee

Fred graduated from University of Dublin, Trinity College in 2008 with a First Class Honours MEng.

On graduation his passion for cars led him to join Aston Martin where he has been ever since covering a variety of roles inbody engineering and working on elements of every AM product currently in production.

Fred is currently Manager in Body CAE overseeing new GT platform vehicles, responsible for developing and delivering all body engineering performance targets (crash, stiffness, NVH) through the use of simulation. Fred is also leading the CAE simulation aspect of an R&D project developing a novel composites technology.

 

Lisa Bingley - Chair Elect

Lisa Bingley 300In her role as Operations Director for the MTI, Lisa led on the initial development and the build phase of the organisation and is now responsible for its overall management including building links between partners and industry.

Lisa is a Chartered Engineer who moved into her current role following a 19-year career with HORIBA MIRA. Leading a team of around 30 engineers, Lisa was responsible for large engineering programmes covering several advanced engineering areas with responsibility for project finance, delivery and governance. Lisa is an experienced IMechE mentor supporting individuals through continuous professional development on their path to Chartership. 

During her career, Lisa managed large consortium-funded and commercial programmes including the Urban Vehicle Range (UVR) programme, which saw the rollout of a range of low emission and fuel-efficient prototype vehicles for waste collection applications through Finance Birmingham and Innovate UK.

Lisa is currently chair of the IMechE Automotive Events Programme Committee and has been a Member since 2004. She is also Vice Chair of IMechE Automotive Division Board. She was Treasurer of her local IMechE centre in Coventry for 14 years.

Lisa’s engineering experience commenced with a five-year toolmaking apprenticeship after which she became a technician apprentice with Ivertech/Magnesium Services Ltd, progressing on to become project engineer. While studying for a degree in engineering at Brunel University, Lisa completed an industrial placement at Daewoo. From there, she joined the HORIBA MIRA graduate programme moving through a range of roles from safety integration engineer to programme manager.

Lisa is a STEM ambassador for Warwickshire and has been responsible for setting up Imagineering clubs at local schools and acting as a judge at the finals of the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair at the NEC in Birmingham. She regularly makes presentations on women in engineering citing her own career as an example of what can be achieved.

John's career grew from vocational and practical roots, starting with a commercial apprenticeship with a broad-based engineering design and manufacturing company, W.B. Bawn,  with evening-classes study through Ordinary and Higher National Certificates (ONC & HNC), plus appropriate endorsements and with Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Service with Messrs Whessoe in the oil and engineering contractor business in Nigeria (1963/64) was ended by the Biafra war. John then joined Ford Motor Company, Europe (Production Planning) immediately and progressed through a range of engineering appointments , e.g. Timing and Operations Control Manager, product development  and Advanced and Research Planning Manager), with overseas assignments. Voluntary duties led to John becoming a Trustee for SETNET, the embryonic version of today’s STEM Learning ; increasingly his work became focused on science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) until formal separation in 1992. Then followed five years leading the successful development of National and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (NVQ/SVQs), before a five-year return to Ford to develop and lead its product development Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the UK – and winning the top-two national awards for STEM education outreach work.

As a long-serving member of the IMechE, and a Fellow since 2002, John has served in a variety of Institution positions alongside a successful industrial and government-service career. Appointments, all elected rather than assigned, posts have included:

  • Member, then Chairman, Automobile Division (AD) - after service in supporting roles
  • Education & Skills Strategy Board (ESSB), Education Advisory Committee (EAC) etc.
  • Council and Council Co-Ordinating Committee (part of the original set-up team)
  • Trustee Board – and interface with various outside bodies (Education for Engineering etc.).

John is the lead FISITA (international collaboration) representative, for the Automobile Division. He continues to be active, with his own engineering consultancy company, and voluntarily advising variously on STEM matters, in the UK and elsewhere, e.g. Japan.

John is a Fellow with the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Management (CMI), with a long record of officer positions with my local area. He is Honorary President of his local engineering heritage museum, Museum of Power. In 2018, he was honoured with the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to STEM education.

Since 1997, John's work has been a mix of self-employment and voluntary, heavily focused on STEM education, working with various agencies and charities. He has been a Fellow of IMechE since 2002 and served in wide range of responsibilities, including education committees, Chair of the Automobile Division, plus Council and Trustee Board.

Dr Tony Pixton

Tony Pixton graduated in Automotive Engineering from Loughborough University and has worked in the automotive industry for over 40 years.

He spent 36 years with Ford Motor Company, primarily in Product Development, including assignments in UK, Germany and the US and with Volvo in Sweden. He also spent three years with Mazda in Japan, as a main board member and assistant to the President, with responsibility for Ford/Mazda joint venture businesses. More recently he operated as the CEO of the Advanced Propulsion Centre, a joint industry/government funded NGO. He is now an independent consultant.

Tony's career has included delivery of major award winning product programmes and international operational management in a global manufacturer. He has experience of both technical and business management, including organisational development, change management, strategic planning and governance.

In 2016 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate by Loughborough University for his achievements in the innovation of vehicle and powertrain design.

Tony Pixton has been a member of IMechE since 1986, a Fellow since 2006 and he was a founding member of the Essex Centre of the Automobile Division.

Dr Oliver Joris - Young Members Representative

Dr Oliver Joris

Graduating from Imperial College with a master’s degree in Aerospace Materials Science Engineering, Dr Oliver Joris obtained his PhD in high energy X-Ray diffraction analysis of super-elastic titanium. Oliver has almost a decade of experience in the automotive industry with roles in quality and product development. As the T6 integration engineer for Ford of Europe, Oliver currently manages calibration program management on the global Ranger and Everest product ranges.

Oliver is an active member of several IMechE committees and an industrial liaison officer for the IMechE at Ford. As well as a member of the Anglia Ruskin University Industrial Advisory Board, Oliver is an Enterprise Advisor for Greensward Academy, and leads Ford’s involvement in the Primary Engineer Leaders Award initiative.

Oliver is an active member of the IMechE and is devoted to continuous learning, and improving the world through engineering.

Mahesh Shinde - India

Mahesh ShindeHead, Validation,  Engineering Research Centre (ERC),Tata Motors

Mahesh is a mechanical engineering graduate and holds a Masters in Management Science, diplomas in mechanical engineering, business management and computer science. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Chartered Engineer.

Mahesh has 35 years of experience in the automotive field including two wheelers, passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Currently Mahesh heads the validation function at the Engineering Research Centre (ERC) of Tata Motors,  for everything from passenger cars to commercial vehicles for all aggregates, systems and specific vehicle level tests.

Mahesh worked in as Head - Research & Development Centre of a 2-wheeler (motorcycles and mopeds) company, controlling all R&D functions.

Keynotes and papers in various international conferences on subjects ranging from structural durability, vehicle systems, advance manufacturing and autonomous driving.  He is also a Technical Evaluator for SIAT/SAE papers, conferencing events, and Tata Group global innovations.

Volunteering in capacity of Chair Automobile Division and as Committee Member of the  Aerospace Division, IMechE India, Mahesh is instrumental in hosting IMechE technical events such as competitions, seminars, learned society lectures, panel discussions and webinars, helping to grow and develop the IMeche India engineering fraternity and society in general.


Professor Clive Neal-Sturgess - Birmingham

Clive Neal-Sturgess was educated at King Edward VI School Nuneaton, was a Student Apprentice, graduated with a first class honours degree from Lanchester College Coventry, and took his PhD at the University of Birmingham.  He held the Jaguar Chair of Automotive Engineering 1988-2004, and was also Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Birmingham.  He has served in numerous bodies within the University of Birmingham, spent 17 years as a member of Senate, and has been a member of Court 1988-2010.  In 2006 he was honoured by being elected a University Foundation Fellow.

He spent the majority of his academic career researching Continuum Damage Mechanics, Finite Element Methods, and latterly injuries to car occupants and pedestrians in crashes.  He has been a member of the IMechE for over 50 years, is co-author of three books and 188 research publications, and a member of the Editorial Boards of three Journals. He is a member of the Parliamentary Advisory Committee for Transport Safety, and is the Chairman of the Professors and Head of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (PHOMME) Sectoral Group of the Engineering Professor’s Council.

Rohin graduated from Coventry University with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering, and obtained his MSc in Automotive Systems Engineering from Loughborough University.

Rohin has worked in industry and research in his career, starting at TATA Technologies where he spent three years, one of those as an intern during his undergraduate degree. He worked in the realms of product lifecycle management, CAD & data management and new product introduction. In his current role at WMG, University of Warwick, he researches battery manufacture methods and technologies including automation of those processes. In conjunction to this he runs STEM activities for students of all ages for WMG Outreach and as a STEM Ambassador. He has been a member of the Coventry AD Panel since 2017.

Steve graduated with a BSc in Production Engineering from the University of Aston in Birmingham and an MSc in Automotive Design Manufacture and Management from the University of Hertfordshire.

Steve is a Fellow of the IMechE, he joined Ford Motor Company as an undergraduate trainee. He worked in manufacturing, progressing into the Product Development group to then work in a number of management roles in body engineering, quality and powertrain. Steve retired from Ford after 36 years which included assignments in Germany and North America. He holds a number of voluntary positions including being member of the Industry Advisory Board for the Automotive Masters program at the Cranfield University, school Chair of Governors and his latest position is to help deliver the government testing program for COVID-19. Steve has been a member of the Essex Centre Automobile Division for the last 10 years.

Michael has recently retired from a 44-year professional engineering career, involving design, development and validation of internal combustion CI engines and their many applications, all fuel types and engine displacements from 1 to 95 litre. He covered all markets  - auto, powergen, industry, construction, marine, defence, rail etc., but with heavy focus on development of automotive product to meet Euro and US emissions equivalent, from prior to any Euro legislation to Euro 6 and Tier 4 legislation.

Michael has strong experience  of Europe, USA and Middle, Near and Far East, involving periods of living and working in USA, Japan and India, and extensive travel to South Korea and China. 

He became a CEng in 1974 and was elected Fellow in 2007. During his careet and since retirement he has continued a strong interest and focus on developing yopung engineers interests and understanding of engineering.

David Bryant - Yorkshire

 Senior Lecturer, Automotive Engineering, University of Bradford

Dr Bryant has a research specialism in automotive brakes and braking.  He graduated with a degree in automotive engineering from the University of Leeds followed by a PhD from the University of Huddersfield in the field of vehicle brake judder supported by Bentley Motors and an EPSRC CASE award.  A period at the University of Huddersfield saw him hold positions of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer before moving to the University of Bradford in 2012.

Dr Bryant’s research interests centre on vehicle brakes and braking systems with a specific focus on noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and braking instabilities. Drawing on regular funding from automotive OEMs, the work has gained international recognition with the publication of conference papers and journal articles. Projects have directly impacted on vehicle design and production and have embedded an understanding of complex problems. Knowledge transfer interests focus on the running of the renowned braking of road vehicles short course for industry and the associated course on the Jaguar Land Rover Technical Accreditation Scheme.

Dr Bryant is a member of the Faculty’s Automotive Research Centre and directs the Braking Research Centre sub-group.  .
