EARLY CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

An 18-month programme designed to enable employers to support early-career engineers in maximising their learning and accelerating the rate at which they realise their full potential.

The IMechE Early Career Programme will help your early-career engineers gain the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in their new role, as well as lay the foundations to support career progression within your organisation.

Almost 80% of employers believe that current graduates are not fully prepared to enter the workforce (CMI, 2021).


Our Programme focuses on professional development (what they don’t learn at school and university) whilst also including some specialised areas. Among the topics covered are personal effectiveness and branding, report writing, project management, innovation, influencing, business skills and Six Sigma principles.

Our blended approach combines formal training, self-guided study, work-based projects, one-on-one coaching, and other elements to provide the best opportunity for growth regardless of their style of learning. This approach will expose participants to a variety of industry sectors and roles, allow them to share experiences and learn together, and enable them to build a network on which they can rely for the rest of their careers.

There are limited places available each year. Places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Programme structure

  • Leading self

    Term one

    Term one focuses on acquiring essential skills for workplace success. There will be a lot of formal training, but also plenty of group discussion. Participants will complete some self-guided study in addition to attending the live training and, at the end of the first term, they will create an action plan and evaluate their learning.

  • Leading the team

    Term two

    Term two focuses on developing the skills that will benefit the participants beyond the programme. The format of face-to-face training, virtual training, discussions, coaching and self-guided study will be similar, but the completion of an ROI work-based project will be a major element of the programme during this stage.

  • Leading the business

    Term three

    Term three concludes with a grand finale, emphasising skill mastery and reflecting on the journey taken. It includes face-to-face training in negotiation, financial management, and business proposal writing. It showcases elements from terms 1 & 2 in the Six Sigma project presentation and ends with a lessons-learned presentation for all line managers.
