Summary

The introduction of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is the UK rail industry's biggest project in decades. It will impact every part of the industry and significantly change how trains are controlled safely in order to meet the ever-increasing demands on the network.

This course provides an overview of what ERTMS is, its constituent parts and the challenges associated with its roll out. It will leave you better informed on how the introduction might affect your role and company, as well as how it works, its benefits and issues, and UK implementation plans. It also provides a technical overview of the ERTMS system and architecture, the functionality of the system and the different levels and modes of operation.

The course will cover topics such as the challenges and issues of the system prior to and during installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance, as well as addressing ongoing and potential future developments (ATO, level 3, TMS, GPRS, etc). It is the fundamental building block of knowledge for those who will be working on the day to day delivery, operation or maintenance of the ERTMS fitted railway.
