Learn about the properties of pneumatic and hydraulic systems and how to apply them in practice.

Pneumatic and hydraulic systems are widely used in many areas of industry. Pneumatics involves converting the energy of a compressed air or gas to make something work. Through the use of compressors, control valves, actuators and other control equipment, pneumatic technology is used to power a range of items such as tools, construction equipment and machinery in the mining, automotive, manufacturing and medical industries to name a few. But how do we convert air into a power source?

Hydraulics involves the study of liquids at rest and in motion, particularly under pressure, and applies that knowledge to the design and control of machines. Hydraulics is used in everyday life in construction equipment, airplanes, cars, manufacturing, medical, subsea and many more. Can you imagine if we didn’t have fluid power? But how does it work?

This course allows candidates to develop the knowledge and understanding of the operational and maintenance requirements of pneumatic and hydraulic systems and be able to recognise circuit components and interpret drawings for applications in everyday life.

Delivery format

This course will be delivered using interactive virtual classroom technology. It comprises of three virtual classes (VCs) of 4 hours each:

VC 1 - Basic principles

  • Introduction
  • Basic principles - fluids
  • Basic principles - air
  • Pneumatic equipment

VC 2 - equipment symbols

  • Hydraulic equipment
  • Safety & maintenance
  • Recognising equipment symbols

VC 3 - Developing circuits

  • Developing circuit diagrams
  • Course summary and assessment of learning

Who should attend?

Training or qualified as mechanical technicians, engineers, or asset, maintenance and reliability personnel working within or supporting the manufacturing, industrial, oil and gas sectors.

After this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of air power and explain how this relates to mechanical and fluid system
  • Understand the concept of fluid power and explain how this relates to mechanical and fluid systems
  • Describe the operational and maintenance requirements of pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Interpret pneumatic and hydraulic circuit diagrams and relate these to everyday applications
