Introduction to Fatigue Failure

Metal fatigue is by far the most common failure of metallic components in all areas of application and can occur in every alloy system. This course will introduce the theory of fatigue failure, identification of fatigue failures, methods for fatigue testing and some techniques for fatigue prevention.

Summary

Metal fatigue is by far the most common failure of metallic components in all areas of application and can occur in every alloy system. This course will introduce the theory of fatigue failure, identification of fatigue failures, methods for fatigue testing and some techniques for fatigue prevention.

The knowledge of fatigue failure is essential in engineering design and product application.

The course will cover the subject matter to provide the attendee with a basic grounding in the subject that could be used in isolation or as a foundation for further learning in the area.

Fatigue is a universal engineering problem that although covered briefly in engineering courses is often forgotten.
This course will cover several aspects of fatigue that in turn will assist in assessment and minimisation of the problem. A number of case studies will be given and samples will be shown to indicate the how the problem can be mitigated.

Who should attend?

The course will be of interest to anyone who is involved in any manufacturing sector where metals are used for example pipelines, rotating machinery, pumps, valves, etc. It will be of particular interest to Manufacturing and Maintenance engineers, design engineers, Project engineers, and the associated area managers.

How will I benefit?

After the course you will be able to…
 • Understand why fatigue occurs
• Understand the mechanisms of fatigue
• Know the circumstances where fatigue is exacerbated
• Have an understanding of actions that can be taken to minimise the problem
• Knowledge of different techniques for reducing the impact of fatigue
• Identify some fatigue failures
• Have some knowledge of carrying out life time assessment of fatigue failure in metallic components

Contributes 7 CPD hours

Key topics

• What is fatigue failure?
• Where does fatigue failure occur?
• What does fatigue failure look like?
• Methods for assessing fatigue life
• How to minimise the problem
