The Qualifications and Membership Audit Committee

The role of the Qualifications and Membership Committee (QMAC) is to provide the audit function and oversight for the IMechE’s policies, procedures and practices, ensuring compliance with both the Engineering Council licence provisions for all licenced activities and with IMechE’s Charter, By-Laws and Qualifications & Training Regulations.

Responsibilities

  • To work in pairs with other QMAC assessors to perform the annual audit cycle for those licensed activities audited by IMechE members
  • Responsible for auditing documents used by IMechE staff to ensure that all applications for membership are processed to meet the requirements of the Engineering Council Registration Code of Practice (RCoP)
  • Provide constructive feedback to the staff, designed to help them in continuous improvement of the processes and audit trail
  • Encourage a free and frank discussion of scheme applications at committee, actively listening and posing questions to explore any areas of concern

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a fundamental part of any career in engineering, ensuring 'professionally registered and active' engineers keep up to date by constantly learning and improving, developing skills and staying abreast of innovation. This will enhance your contribution to engineering and help you get the most out of your career. All volunteering roles offered by the Institution provide support for your CPD.

Role Requirements

  • A professionally registered member of the Institution
  • Familiarity with the principles of audit practices
  • Experience of the Audit process or work associated with reviewing and improving documents
  • Experience with benchmarking and analysis of processes to ensure gaps can be identified
  • Ideally in an engineering management role
  • Aware of the relevant Engineering Council policy, procedures and guidance documents, specifically the Registration Code of Practice (RCoP) and UK-SPEC.

Commitment

  • A schedule of ca.15 audits per year are conducted by staff or volunteers
  • Committee members are expected to participate in at least 2 Member audits per year. There is a two-week turnaround time for each report arising from an audit.
  • Committee meetings are held 2 times per year, with 1 conducted virtually and 1 face-to-face meeting pa at the Institution’s HQ
  • Attend both committee meeting each year, in order to remain current with the audit processes and policies, changes in the membership processes, and EngC regulations
  • An expected term of 5 years’ service
  • Complete training as necessary
  • Committee members are required to sign a Data Protection Agreement

Initial Training

  • Attend a formal training session conducted either virtually or at IMechE HQ.
  • Observe a committee meeting with case discussion

The IMechE will cover all reasonable expenses incurred to attend a committee meeting in person.
